Welcome Words

Welcome to our holiday blog! We're very new to this so forgive us if the blog looks a bit clunky or awkward at times. Anyway, we hope you will enjoy following our travels through Southern USA. During March and April we will be discovering America's 'Deep South', launching our journey in Las Vegas and ending in Texas. We hope you enjoy reading about our journey and (mis)adventures along the way...Daren, Melissa and Logan

Chitlins anyone?

Logan feeds the giraffes at Memphis Zoo.
Well, after a delightful spring day at the Memphis Zoo on Friday (rated number 1 in America; the boys enjoyed the pandas, I took more interest in observing the behaviours of the humans), we have spent the past couple of days exploring rural Tennessee.

This is baptist country, where honest rural folk proudly display the American flag and every car and piece of machinery they have ever owned in their front yards (all in varying states of disrepair).

Main Street Lynchburg - a mecca for HD and JD enthusiasts
The weekend speciality here is "chitlins" (google it!). Also popular are frogs legs and deer - basically anything you can catch and kill yourself. On Saturday night, our lovely host from the GreenRose of Raus B&B sent us to Granny Fishes for dinner. This is a small log cabin on a river which serves as a restaurant for the locals. We got to try hush puppies (fried cornbread), catfish (soft but not as muddy as I expected) and fried apple pie. Logan had the fried chicken - very good but not as good as Vicksburg. The atmosphere here was the real attraction. If you weren't a local you would never even find Granny Fishes such is its lack of signage and back road location. Everyone knows everyone else, so our arrival caused some interest: Most of the people there said we were the first Australians they had ever met - I hope we made the right first impression!
The DH bottle shop (sorry Dean, your bottle isn't this big)

Middle Tennessee is also home to Jack Daniels whiskey (which starts out as a bourbon but is transformed into a Tennessee whiskey by being filtered through a special charcoal). They have recently changed the legislation in Lynchburg country so tourists can buy a limited number of special bottles direct from the distillery but there is no sampling - this is a "dry"county.

We are in Nashville now, home to two types of country music: Good country music, and great country music. Stay tuned for more...

The General Lee at Cooters - I get this show so much more now I have been to Tennessee!

Our lovely B&B host Pat, who sent us off with a breakfast of fresh fruit salad,  praline pecan french toast, egg and bacon muffin (and home-made choc chip cookies for Logan to have for morning tea).

  1. Good morning Azzopardi family, I'll pass on the Chitlins thanks, from the couple of recipes I found sounds like you might as well boil leather and eat it! And at least leather is on the outside! Lovely B & B - nice host too! Didn't find anyone to take you for a spin on the Harley Mel? All good here, everyone improving day by day. Love to you all, Mum and Jim. XX

All is going well on the trip however the quality of food seems to have dropped off for me..how can you go from fried chicken to frogs legs. Tell me have you seen 'Boss Hog'??I also noticed that Pats house keeping (external view) looks up to your standard...are all the houses so well presented??
All is well on out side of the whole..I am sure that you heard even in USA that LNP have won the state election and labour got a thumping...Yes pocket rocket Campbell is around to stay!!Keep up the fantastic work with the blog and look forward to the next instalment.
